In Steel Flowers, a hair salon becomes the nerve center of a group of women more interested in gossip than a good blowout. “If you have nothing nice to say about anyone, come on over and chat a little…” one of the clients jokes. In this world of accepted superficiality—Thérèse, the salon owner, tries to instill her motto in her apprentice: “Natural beauty doesn’t exist!”—lighter topics (hairstyles, creams, manicures, recipes, PMS, wrinkles) rub shoulders with harsher realities (loneliness, illness), leaving the audience teetering between laughter and a lump in their throat.
